I remember one of my first interactions as graduate student, learning about anatomy, and thinking about how such a large amount of organs and tissues live in our body cavity, and how there must be a domino effect. When I push on one area, it will effect another, merely because of the lack of space. So its easy to see how, if there was a problem in the ankle, which touches the shin bones, which are connected to the hips by your knee and large thigh bone, that then are connected by ligaments, and fascia, to your low back, and you can experience pain anywhere in that chain. It would seem also to suggest that sometimes Pain in one area is not the real area needing to be treated. This is why treatment alone, of a symptom complaint, may not have the lasting effects so many come into the clinic desiring. It may take pushing over some dominos in that kinetic chain to see where the origin or the tipping point may truely be. While it seems simple, it is also simply forgotten when the pain overrides even our most primitive and unconscious thoughts. This is where a clinician, willing to be patient, to listen, to watch, to research, can walk along side the symptom, while also investigating on behalf of you. It may take some trial and error, most of which are non-invasive, it may take additional testing, or it may be glaringly obvious to a trained eye. Nevertheless, its important to have someone on your team, to push you, to listen to you, to search in an exponential manner, and give you the options to set the dominos back up, get out of pain, and back to the things you love doing.
